Terry McKenna Maidstone I remember it well: Anyone remember or know what happened to Brian Hampshire? Formerly of St Francis RC Primary and lived in Harrietsham, on the caravan site circa 1954-1960. I think Hugh Shannon remembers his actual address: Did i remember that right Hugh? Another name is Ray Smith who lived next door to the Butchers at the Allen Street end of Hedley Street with his "Uncle" Cyril!! And lastly James Beal who lived at the "Posh" end of Holland Road (78!!) near the Sitingbourne Road end! He was a great mate of Jim Yarwood and yes Jim i'm still "looking". Ironically James went to Bristol University (where i live: Bristol that is!). He is an Artist of some distinction and i think has his own "Gallery" and is known as James A Beal. That should get a few heads "scratching". Brian Swain it was indeed St Pauls (Near the prison walls)that burnt down in about 1960 and could be seen for miles around!! I can see this section getting lots of similar requests Peter!!
Robin Beames Maidstone I remember it well: Brian Swain, that rings a bell,I believe you were a year ahead of me at school Brian but met you in Nairobi 1960 ? we were both in the army. Be nice to hear from you. St. Peters Church is still standing ! It was st. Pauls that burned down in about 1960 I believe.

Sandra Evenden
Country: South Africa Maidstone I remember it well: In answer to Wendy Gearings recollections of Maidstone I worked at Prunells from 1962-1968 when Barney introduced the Chinese restaurant next door. As many others in this chat line I attended school at St Pauls, North Borough and Vinters Girls. I lived in Knowel Road and later in Barming where my Dad lived until his death in 2008. I remember Mr Jones and Mr Hopkins at North Borough and a boy called Max Shingler! Miss Downing and Ms Bret were at Vinters. At our last years talent show at Vinters a group of us blacked our faces and got on stage to bang a drum and sing'In the jungle, the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight. Unknown to me then in 1968 I took the free passage offered to South Africa and have lived here ever since. It would be great to hear from someone who was at school with me. Fond memories are of Penenden Heath,Vinters Park, Boxley Hills. The Pilgrims cafe in Bank St. I danced at 'The Star' and went to the Ritz and Granada cinemas. I also attended Anne Thorbans ballet school held in the Old Palace...
Hi Sandra was that Prunellas?

Rosemary
Maidstone I remember it well:
Gosh! I just came across this website...going down memory lane by looking at street views of Maidstone of where I lived as a small child - Sandling Rd - "The Rose Salon" which was next door to a fish and chip shop. Was that yours Ruby Todd? Do you remember my parents: Pauline - who ran the salon - and father John? There was a shop selling wool yarns on the other side to us. I used to play with the boy who lived there...I think they had a spaniel...This was all in the early 60's. Those shops were torn down in the mid/late 60's...We immigrated to Perth, Australia in 1968. I returned to the UK in my 20's and now live in London...I have visited Maidstone once, and my memories came flooding back when I did...Just that everything seemed so much smaller! Thanks everyone for your memories.
Rosemary
Maidstone I remember it well:
Hello Peter, thanks for the website...I sent a message about Sandling Rd earlier today and realise you are not posting these messages on specific pages anymore. However, please will you post the one I wrote earlier, and this one, in "Where are they now?" I really would be interested to hear from Ruby Todd, or her daughter, who I think I played with as a child (although I think she posted in 2007 and it's now November 2012, and in another post she said she was born in 1928. So, I guess, she may no longer be looking at websites!)
Sorry Rosemary this is the best I can do. It is really down to where I can find empty space on the site these days.
Regards Peter

Maidstone I remember it well: i am trying to find out what would have happened to a one day old baby that died in marden kent in 1945. would his record be with one of the hospitals? all other avenues have been exhausted ..unless there was a midwives record of his birth and death..can anybody help please. thankyou in advance..angela.
Terry McKenna
Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Angela. That's a very big ask. Several things may have happened that could affect your enquiry. Obviously you need to know either or the mothers maiden or married name. The actual day of the birth. Where the baby was born ie. home or hospital or maybe a childrens home. This could affect where any records may be kept. It is possible because of the sad loss at a day old the baby might not have been registered, especially as it was in war time. I lost a child 40 years ago at birth and we were given the opportunity to register the birth which my wife and I never did, something I have always regretted. So as you can see there is a lot to need to know. All birth records are now kept at Kew at the G.R.O. A last thought is the local parish records or family that may still be around. Hope that might be of some help. Contact me on terrymckenna178@btinternet.com if you need any more info.

Message for Ian Anslow
from Mike Wellard
I remember Ian very well especially our outing to the Maidstone Court House .
We had some difficulty with the law on our way home from the Old Boys Association at the Technical school one Friday night.
I have never apologised to Ian for getting him involved with my prank ,but unfortunately the law ignored the truth and he was fined 10 shillings .
If this site allows contact then I am mwellard100@gmail.com Rangiora New Zealand .
I think that Ian was also one of the 5B skiffle group .

Maidstone I remember it well: I have also like others that have posted messages have got alot of great memories of Maidstone and of Allington Park where I lived in Trevor drive and of the school Brunswick house from 1963-1966. Remember the Headmistress Mrs.Foster who used to live up on the London Road in a white house that over looked the school playing field and Mr.Impy who was my last form teacher. As a young lad of 11yrs back then I was heart broken at having to leave my friends as my parents sold up and moved to Woodley just out side Reading to be near my older Sister.Joined Frends Re-United in hope of making contact with those I went to school with and some of my old friends from the Allington Park estate. Have made contact with others from those days and Iam still hoping to make contact with others from that period via that web site it takes time if any one stumbles across this site like I have this morning and remembers Brunswick house join Friends Re-United you never no what will turn up unless you try. Hi Angela, not sure if you saw my post l was in a tizz and it was added to Terry's reply to you. There is a lady at Marden who knows pretty much anything and everyone in the village, her name is Alison Hooker, if you email the Marden website she may be able to help you, possibly even to this day there are people of the age that could well remember something that you are seeking an answer too. She has a PDF file of all graves in the area too.

Jim Harris (jimharris_ifa@yahoo.com) Maidstone I remember it well: - Roger (Banfield) In one of your entries you asked if anybody knew the whereabout of Wilkie (I guess Rodney Wilkins) and Nigel Wise. The three of us went to the Boys Tech together, and Ian Edge. Rod and I went on the trolley from the bottom of Mangravet Avenue on the 08.10 every day for 3 years where we sat upstairs at the back sharing a cigarette. My parents moved to Sidcup in 1960 immediately after I left school and I went to work for an insurance company in the City so those years you talk about with them at the Tav were mostly missed by me. I do remember all of us drinking there and also meeting together at the back of your parents shop. A friend told me that Nigel is in New Zealand although the last time I actually spoke to him was around 1962 when we all met in Soho for a boys booze up. As for Rod, he had met a girl who lived in the Channel Islands and whether he married her or not I don't know but when my parents moved back to Mai dstone around 1975, my Mother used to bump into his Mother shopping in Maidstone and eventualy she told me that he was living in Jersey. Maidstone must have some magnetism as in 1966 I moved back with my wife (having moved to Plymouth for a couple of years) and worked in and around Maidstone from then on. Aware that he might still be in Jersey and whilst sitting at an office desk in Cornwallis House in Pudding Lane, decided to look in the Chanel Islands phone book in case it gave a number for Rodney Mervyn Wilkins. There he was R M Wilkins. I rang but he was obviously busier than me so the call was relatively brief and it wasn't a particularly good line. I think he said he was an auctioneer. That was around 1992 and the last time we spoke. If you know anything of any of them I'd be delighted to hear. Jim Harris

Maidstone I remember it well: Regarding the railway at Maidstone zoo , Iremember riding on it once at a guess around 1950 ,I also saw it years later and can recall that it was fitted with a Lister LD2 diesel engine. When the zoo had long gone and the land had become a country park I spent a few days working on the horse ride with a Cat 63k filling holes spreading stone etc . Something that Iwould like to know is the whereabouts of the family members of a Mr Moseley that lived at Lord Romneys hill at least up until the mid 1960s I know that he had a daughter named Delia . Iam trying to trace some photographs of a machine that Mr Moseley owned prior to WW2. Regards Les.
