Maidstone I remember it well: I lived in Shepway till 1959 but my memory is very bad. I am looking for some history about Herberts Cafe on Bank St which my mum and dad used for their reception in 1946. Any info of that time would help me complete a scrap book about my parents lives. My dad (Dennis E Greenaway) was a draughtsman and played cricket for Tovil I think. I remember sitting watching him play. My mum (Daphne E Greenaway) worked at Pickfords. Thanks for any help

Maidstone I remember it well: Hi everyone It's great to read so many memories from people all over the Maidstone area just not getting any feedback from people living in the shepway estate area. Have lived in Maidstone since the age of 5, I am now 67 and know of most of the things that people have been reminiscing about. Brilliant site bringing back lots of memories. Regards to all Edd Lees.

Maidstone I remember it well: I was born in Maidstone and lived on Willington Street. I worked as a clerk at the Maidstone @ District bus company around 1966 and remember the floods. Do you remember the guy who would direct traffic at the intersection outside the cinema/bus station. No one bothered him and even obeyed his directions loved the carnival every year and the floats that went through Maidstone. The Rumpy Bar which was the first burger joint in town. I went to the Manor youth club on the green in Shepway and became a part time youth leader there along with Keith another youth leader who everyone loved. My best friends was Sandra Bond who lived on Northunberland Road and was born around 1951, Carol Woolet who lived opposite me on Willington Street and married Peter Clark and Shirley who married Steve. After 32 years of living in the USA I would love to make contact with them

Maidstone I remember it well: Does anyone know anything about Geo Fowler, Lee and Co. Ltd bottling business? George, a key player in the British bottling industry ran the firm from 1903-1908 at 78 Bank Street, before shifting to Reading. Am writing a book about the firm and its founder. Thanks, Mark.

Maidstone I remember it well: Hoping to trace my best mate at Southborough Juniors School in the early 60s - Patricia Arnold, who lived at No. 30, Birch Tree Way; lost touch when we moved from West Park Road and I went to Senacre
When we lived in West Park Road we could hear the siren, and our dog used to howl along with it every time it went off

Maidstone I remember it well: Miss Morphew was a wonderful headmistress. She was fair & considerate. On reflection she was maybe gay as was the head of Maidstone High Scool for Girls. Both spinsters & dedicated to to the education & furtherance of women. I remember the excitement of going to the swimming baths, costumes rolled up in towels. And the overwhelming smell of beer from the brewery.
I went to North Borough & then Vintners Girls 1960s Don't know how old these posts are but have to say Miss Morphew, what an amazing example she was - go for it girls! And Miss Dowding, real scientist
I took over the site in may 2013 and Peter had ran it for around 5 years that is why I started adding the date to the posts

Maidstone I remember it well: Seeing Southborough Boys School reminded me of a friend I lost contact with when we moved to Hastings in 1968. Does anyone know what happened to David Waite? We both left Southborough in 1962. He came to see me before he went back to South Africa, but the last I heard he had returned to the UK. Any information would be appreciated.

Sandra Evenden Country: South Africa Maidstone I remember it well: In answer to Wendy Gearings recollections of Maidstone I worked at Prunells from 1962-1968 when Barney introduced the Chinese restaurant next door. As many others in this chat line I attended school at St Pauls, North Borough and Vinters Girls. I lived in Knowel Road and later in Barming where my Dad lived until his death in 2008. I remember Mr Jones and Mr Hopkins at North Borough and a boy called Max Shingler! Miss Downing and Ms Bret were at Vinters. At our last years talent show at Vinters a group of us blacked our faces and got on stage to bang a drum and sing'In the jungle, the mighty jungle the lion sleeps tonight. Unknown to me then in 1968 I took the free passage offered to South Africa and have lived here ever since. It would be great to hear from someone who was at school with me. Fond memories are of Penenden Heath,Vinters Park, Boxley Hills. The Pilgrims cafe in Bank St. I danced at 'The Star' and went to the Ritz and Granada cinemas. I also attended Anne Thorbans ballet school held in the Old Palace... Hi Sandra was that Prunellas?

Hi Sandra, Hope this finds you well and happy if and when you get to read it! I don’t know whether you will remember me but I do remember you from North Borough School. You were a pretty, petite little girl with blonde hair and you often wore it in a pony tail. I, on the other hand, was quite big for my age and had long brown hair always tied up in plaits and was a bit of an ugly duckling and tomboy! Do you remember Georgina Johnson? She was the other one in plaits in our class, except hers were blonde and she was very feminine and extremely pretty. I attended all three schools you mention, as indeed did at least five other friends of mine - some of whom are in a school photo of our class at North Borough and both of us are in it (plus Max Shingler - LOL). You may even have that same photo yourself. My best friend was - and still is - Janice Mahoney (she is in the photo too) and do you remember Barbara Funnell who lived in Fisher Street? I knew Margaret Cox later in life as she worked for KCC as did Barbara Funnell. I am still great friends with Phyllis Bytheway, albeit at a distance as she emigrated to Australia many years ago. I still exchange Christmas cards with Hilary Fryer who used to live in Sandling Lane, Penenden Heath, as did Phyllis Bytheway and myself. Do you remember Shirley Trussel and Jackie Shardlow who were both daughters of prison officers and lived in Salisbury Road and who were in in our class? I am a Facebook friend of Shirley now but we have been unable to locate Jackie, who Shirley was great friends with at North Borough but sadly she lost touch with her. Recently I have been fortunate enough to make contact again with Rosemary Halliday, through contact with Dawn Shoebridge’s cousin, Yvonne Shoebridge, who I knew from Maidstone Technical College. There are loads more children I remember and can name from that class photo of 2M I mentioned. Are you still in touch with anyone from St Paul’s, North Borough or Vinter’s Girls?

Just seen the entry by Les Huggins from 2016. I remember everyone on the list. My brothers and sister are spread all over the place. Marjorie lives in Oldham, Will is in France and I live in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately Wally died in Durban, South Africa in 2011. Nice to see all the old names, I wonder how many are left?

Re Brian Hampshire. Ex St Francis School Maidstone. His sister remained in Kent for a while (sorry forgotten her name). Brian lived in the West Country , maybe Devon?? I sort of came across him 30 years ago when I worked for BT. Completely lost contact though. I left BT, went to work in USA with MCI, then came back to work for Ericcson as Principal Consultant in Ireland.
