Maidstone I remember it well:
Was looking over some of the many and varied comments from Maidstonians current and former residents and from all round the world. Well it's cheaper than looking up back issues of the Kent Messenger!! Talking of the KM does anyone remember a weekly comments page called: Tilting Post and written by a certain John Quintain: J.Q. was in fact my Dad Mac McKenna and some of the 'debates' were quite lively to say the least!! The reason I've recalled that particular page is mainly because of the tons of 'Piffle' and almost hysterical coverage of one recently late and former Prime Minister:
Suffice to say that I didn't and still don't have anything but, shall we say not the nicest thoughts of her! but why the 'rioting' and vitriol, mainly by those that weren't even born when she "Ruled" the world. Yes she was a divisive figure but she was still someone's Mum so please some respect.
Blimey never thought I'd write anything remotely 'kind' about Thatcher.
Getting away from the Topic of the day: Does anyone remember the blue Police Telephone Boxes? No not the Doctor Who ones; the little square ones usually on a wall, that were big enough to house an old fashioned corded phone. Opposite the sadly missed Greyhound Pub where Sargent and Parks was there was one, and just past St. Lukes Avenue on the LHS of Holland Road, just before the Sittingbourne Road there was one.
Really silly thing to admit but if you opened the door a voice would speak and we would run away (Well I didn't!!).
I also remember having my precious Vespa scooter stolen from what was then open ground and used as a car park, opposite the Ritz ABC. In tears I told a passing policeman and he told me to go to the cop shop next door to the M&D bus station.
When I got there they already knew all the details I'd given to the local copper. I was amazed and was shown the latest bit of kit the Police had just got: It was a Walkie Talkie!! AND they found my scooter a week later in Grimsby!! My friend John Sargent took me on the back of his Honda 125cc to retrieve it!
