Maidstone I remember it well: I do not remember what Susan Beautridge father did for a living. I remember she lived near the prison and I lived in Heathorn Street. I think we went to Saturday Art School together.
Terry do you remember Carol Eborn who lived near you. Have found an old photo with her on it when we were in the Girl Guides.
Also do you remember the little wool shop opposite your Fathers Bakery

Hi Valerie. Not too sure why Les Swaffer has reposted this to me AND presumably yourself too! I did reply on this site to your observations. Susan Beautridge's Dad was a great friend of my own Dad Mac McKenna. For the life of me I can't remember either what he did! Trouble is everyone knew my family, especially Dad. I suspect he may have been a member of The Odd Fellows Society, as Dad was, OR possibly through his Political connections as a Liberal Councillor and in 1983/4 Dad you may remember became Mayor of Maidstone, with Mum Kathleen as his Lady Mayoress. He was very proud to serve Maidstone for many years at ALL levels, including the County Council of Kent. Yes I do remember Carol Eborn (OR the name at least!). I used to belong to the St Luke's Scouts and Cubs and spent a lot of time in the hut, which last time I looked at OUR old shop (what a mess that has become) was still there; and of course the old bakery is now garages and Godfrey Holmes next door, where I worked was a printers of some sort! The little wool shop opposite OUR Bakers/Shop was Mankelows. My dear but sadly gone lifetime friend Trevor Miles lived at number 14 Holland Road right next door to Mankelows. It was rather odd BUT on a Sunday they weren't allowed to open to sell wool BUT our shop which was also an Off Licence was!! Old man Mankelow would be sat in the right hand corner of the shop at the back and never seemed to move very far in those long gone days. Mrs Mankelow was a lovely lady and John her son was a friend, though not too close. There were also daughters whose names I can't remember. Do you still live in Maidstone then? I live in Bristol and this year it will be 50 years on!! I trust and hope you are well and all your family too. My own email is: terrymckenna178@btinternet.com
