Maidstone I remember it well: The sand pit! I remember it well, playing there with Graham Beames (Bing), Noel Dearing, the Cowdrey boys and others - all of us living so close on Boxley Road, Faraday Road and Penenden Heath Road. Also firework time was, in those days, good "fun" when we would light a 2d Cannon and through it into the air raid sheltera. Grown up now! And I remember the Fremlins steam Sentinels that would refuel with water from the hydrant by the old bus stop, near The Bull and, sometimes, they would do likewise at The Sheepwash.
Maidstone I remember it well: Just found this site as result of article in Downs Mail and what a lot of memories come flooding back. Firstly, Les - are you related to Brian? If so, I last saw him back in 1996 at Bob Arnold's funeral and please give him my regards. Next, I was born in 1942 at The Howard Nursing Home in Fant Road which did, much later, become Howard House - a girls home - where, at one time in the early '60's, an Eve Butcher was the house mother. I started school at St Paul's (the old one in Lower Boxley Road), then onto North Borough (Mr Hopkins - Miss Rootes - Mr Wraight) and in 1953 went onto Sir Roger Manwood's Grammer School, Sandwich as a boarder. Since then done a plethora of jobs, including PDDD at Reeds (who remembers that department?) Maidstone Caravan Company and John Liddell Motor Accessories to name the local ones. Now, at 71, sort of retired with a home at Harrietsham and also, with my newly married 2nd wife (originally my teenage girlfriend from Sandwich), on Alderney in the Channel Islands. Do get in contact if you wish.
