Maidstone I remember it well: I was born in St Peter Street where Matalan and Lidl store I remember the gas works containers opposite and the general store at the end of the old bridge, which is now part of the one-way system over the river Medway.
I was born over Maskells office and my parents worked for the firm. My father delivered the liquid produce to pubs in the Kent area, my Mother cleaned the offices - while I climbed all over everything. Or so I understand from my Mother.
I remember the pub a few doors along but do not recall the name although I remember the very buxom lady who played the accordion.
Around the corner in The Broadway was another pub with a cobbled courtyard where once they housed the horses - I cannot remember the name of this one either I'm ashamed to say.
Does anyone know what happened to the monument of Queen Victoria in the High Street. Or the cannon further down the high street.
I still think, personally, they are a better option to a sheep and now it is mostly a pedestrian area they would fit in very nicely with adding a bit of historical interest to the town.
Although it is nice to remember the good things from the past, we must remember that we no longer have the smog like we used to have due to the pollution from the river and gas works. Not to mention the rats. My Mum used to talk about them and the time she threw a dustbin lid over one to trap it.
My Grandparents and parents had a cycle shop in Tonbridge Road just opposite the Esso Garage. My Grandfather used the back room as a boxing ring at one time but this was before my time.
If anyone remembers me or my family my maiden name was Emmett and I attende Westborough School for my first year, then went to Molehillcopse School followed by secondary schooling at Senacre School which, although the last of these to have been built, is now non-existent. The land now being used for housing - nothing new there then.
Happy memories to all.
