Maidstone I remember it well: Hi Hugh: The picture looks like the Granada when Des O'Connor was singing!! instead of comparing the brilliant "Pop" shows we used to get and I saw in the 60's... I also remember "Disc Jocks" as they were once referred as: David Jacobs, Pete Murray and even "Diddy" David Hamilton AND Jimmy Tarbuck as well as "Deaf" O'Connor, as the brilliant long running joke from Morcambe & Wise suggested. Although we did get to see most of the BIG stars of the day, in reality they usually only sang their last hit and the hopeful next one!! I remember my Mum and Dad taking me to the Drill at Chatham to see David Whitfield; commonly known as "The Voice" {long before Russell Watson} His PA system such that it was in those days broke down and he could be barely heard 3 rows back!! Mind you i was in my pram!!!

Maidstone I remember it well: I still live in Maidstone, not Canada, but cannot scroll down to UK. I am pretty certain that the picture of the cinema is not of the Granada, but of the second Ritz in the town. This one was in King street, and had 3 frescos around the top of the screen, of dancers I think. 2 of these can be seen on this picture, but not very clearly. A better quality picture can be found if you google "Old Maidstone cinemas", and look on images of. Hello to Christine, must be the one I know. (K.C.M.). Duncan.

Maidstone I remember it well: Definitely a photo of the Granada Cinema. In the late 60’s early 70’s, whilst working at Rootes Maidstone in the day, worked evenings at the Granada as an usher (complete with braided shoulder pads jacket, peaked hat & torch!) you could walk along the raised corridors where those balconies were with those cut out panels behind and look down on the audience in the stalls. Remember movies released a that time The Dirty Dozen, Easy Rider, Midnight Cowboy, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service & The Love Bug to name a few. My fiancée Hazel Jones worked there as an usherette and so I had to get in on the act!
