Dover Dover was once on a island separated by a river from Recolover to Sandwich . The River Dour runs down into the inlet forming a natural Harbour.and supplying the town with fresh water. The Romans had two beacons one one each either side of Dover a guide for ships. The Romans Built two forts and the town begun to grow. When the Romans left Dover continued to grow and trade with the Continent ' In the middle of the tenth century the town was recognized by the crown that it granted enormous rights and privilegs to the people of Dover.For providing Ship service with ships and crews for the defense of the Realm.

In the eleventh Century Dover was governed by The Prostius An old civic organation it had many rights and privileges and Ship Service duties recorded in the Domesday Book. After the Battle of Hastings Dover was ransacked and burnt to the ground because they offered resistance to the Normans so little remains of the old Saxon town. The Twelth Certury there was a great deal of Development. The Monastery of St Martin le Grande wea built on the West sid of the harbour where a Roan Fort had stood Maison Dieu a travellers hostel and Dover Priory were built. Dover Castle was also built on Wastern Heights it became known as 'the gate and Key to England The French in the thirteenth century invaved and layed seige of the castle .The defenders withstood in spite of much danage to the Castle.including the North Gate that was the main entrance. Afterwards this as blocked up . A new was built seawards of the old one a complicated gateway has 5 towers now known as the Constable's Tower.

After the Conquest Dover was one of the original Cinque ports .The Confederation of Cinque Ports ,5 Head Ports and 2 Towns.and later other towns joined to perform Ship Service to the Crown. Henry the Eighth was very interest I Dover he built the breakwater to prevent silting and formed a Harbour. Henry the Eighth fortified the south East with the new gun weapons and Gun positions to the castle. Queen Elizabeth provided the town with the Pent,the first enclosed harbour now part of Wellington Dock but her most prized gift was her Charter' Jame I In 1606 took the harbour and presented it to a cabal of court followers and county squires who nothing about running a harbour or cared. Since then the town and Harbour have gone there separate ways.
