Maidstone I remember it well: I saw an earlier message from someone who was in the US Air Force stationed at the RAF site in Detling. I was there at the time and one of my good friends was Bill White (USAF), Married a girl from Detling by the name of Sandy. I know Bill moved back to the US and I heard from him once, but that was years ago. To the person who posted that message earlier, let me know if you knew him and whether you are in touch?
To Wayne who added this entry:- Maidstone I remember it well: I arrived in the UK in May 1963...I was in the USAF Stationed at ColdBlow RAF Station near Detling. Do you remember Lansberger and Bill White, and there was an Hawaiian guy stationed there. don't remember the Sgt. Would be interesting in hearing from you.

PeterS Hastings. Newzealand. Teston-Maidstone Talking of Airfields. I lived right next to West Malling airfield, nr Maidstone. I attended the video launch of the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour" which was filmed at the airfield. 1965 I think it was. We were so naive and had no idea what part of History we were making.

Maidstone I remember it well: Hello Les, What a fabulous site. I'm only sorry I've missed it 'til now. I've lived in Maidstone all my life & I'm now pushing 60 with a very short stick, (born jan '56). I started school age 4 at St Francis in Week St, moved to Holy Family when it opened (I think in 65) & then to the Boys Tech from '67 'til '73. Anyone remember me ? I have 3 brothers: Kevin, Terry & Michael who all went to the Grammar School and 3 sisters: Margaret (Girls Grammar who is now sadly no longer with us)Eileen (Vinters)& Patricia (St Simon Stock). I would love to hear from anyone who remembers any of us, or who remembers the police phone box at the top of the High Street; Cigarette machines on the street; traffic and narrow pavements on Week St, Bank St & Gabriels Hill; "No Spitting" signs on the trolley busses (smoking upstairs on same); the M&D bus station opposite the Granada (last bus always left before the movie ended goddammit !) and when anybody behind a counter, desk or bar called you "sir" or "madam" instead of "mate" or "love" (sorry-Meldrew moment),or gawking into the window of the gun shop in Bank St. I have too many memories to list in one pos

Peter BullionThere is a fellow named John Warner who has posted on the maidstone site talking about going regularly to the snooker room over Burton's tailors in week street. I joined the army in early 1960 and every time i came home on leave i used to always bump in to a guy every one called Fritz. He didn't work so was always round maidstone , and used to take me up to the snooker room when i was home on leave. I never knew his real name , but he was a very likeable and popular guy and every one called him Fritz . He was tallish , slim, had a ring in one ear ( might have had 2 later) big blue eyes , always smiling. I'd love to know if John Warner knew him in the snooker room, as i'd really like to know if Fritz is still alive. He used to go up the snooker room and cadge fags off the guys he knew who were up there playing snooker. I never really knew him but used to meet him in maidstone every time i came home on leave and i really liked him. My girl friend used to work in Peggy Tylies in middle row.She used to be with me sometimes when i met Fritz . I married her and .she remembers him also . We'd both love to know is he still about.

Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: I lived in eastborough during the 1950s attended East Borough Junior and Vinters Secondary. I'm looking for my mates,Pughy,Oakley, and Baker. My two nemesis were the headmasters Harris and later, Reid (the weed), bullies both. Most teachers were ok, one or two were full of themselves, but school was mainly pretty good, thanks to my mates.

Les Huggins Maidstone I remember it well: Hello again
The "ruddy faced" newspaper seller who stood outside the Red Lion (Gin Palace) at the top of High Street, was definitely called CYRIL.
The gentleman who used to throw bread to pigeons and swear at passers-by in Gabriels Hill was called, VIC GASH and he lived in nearby Ringlestone.
Other well known faces in Maidstone at the time was an old chap who was (reputedly) shellshocked from the war. His name was "SNOWBALL" and he lived somewhere around North Borough School. ----------------------------------------------
I lived in Ringlestone from 1946 (when I was born) to 1965 (when I got married) and have seen lots of names on M-I-K-I-Well. Many of them I remember well.
I know I love lists, but I list below some of those who were brought up in Ringlestone in the fifites and sixties. My hope is that the names invoke their own memories of these people, to all readers of this excellent site. I will list Calder Rd on this occasion and in the future I will list Dickens, Egerton, Edna, Lushington, Monctons and Chatham Road.
CALDER ROAD Mick, Robert, Ralph, Tony and Evelyn Veness. Rodney Carter Malcolm Hayes, Neville Hayes George, Roy, Douglas,Jim, Jean Morgan Pearl, Pauline, Pamela,Penny Wightman William, Keith,Walter, Marjory Sedge Colin, Pauline, Wills David,Maureen, Knott Martin, Yvonne, Earl Barry, Angela, Emery Nigel Iggleden (died in a motor bike accident aged 19) Ruth, Joan, David, Morris Huggett Dennis Brooks Diane, Terry, Franks Janet, Derek,Margaret Swan Geoff Goldup Len, Marylin,Avis, Bond Charlie Dann Kenny, Derek, Brooker Ian,Leo Pratt Angus Ring and brother "Cruiser" Terry, Colin, Alan, Janet, Neville, Durling Wendy, Joy, Eillen, Rex Gibbons Pete, Teresa, Bridget, Gamble Rob, June, Jackie Tucker John (Jinxy) Stevens June, Ray Cross The shopkeepers in Calder Road were, THE CO-OP the Manager was Mr Alan Watson who lived in Edna Road, SMITHS STORES AND OFF LICENCE Ted an Ethel (Vi) Smith who lived on the premises WCL CUTBUSH The local Butcher who also lived above the shop
Hope this has jogged a few fond memories.

I wonder if you would be kind enough to post this on your site in the appropriate place. I would be very grateful as it would mean so much to my Mum.
Kind regards
Wendy

My name is Wendy
I am trying to trace a a lady who's maiden name was Wade( Janet)Janet Wade originated from Maidstone in the 1950s. I know she had at least one brother who worked in one of the paper mills. Janet moved to Smallfield Hospital(near Horley) in 1955 where she worked in catering with my mother who was at that time Patricia Foulston (known as Pat). They worked together until 1957 when Janet moved to be with her mother Newton Abbot Devon. They lost touch with each other.
If anyone has any information(even where she lived or went to school would be helpful as mum can't remember) I would be grateful as I know my mother would very much like to contact her.
Many thanks Wendy

Helen Daniels Maidstone I remember it well: Dear Peter
First, may I say that I really love to read your website, especially marvelling at the quite remarkable memory of Les Huggins, who has written a number of earlier posts and has reminded me of the names of my teachers at St Paul's Infants School, although I did remember one of them who also taught me and my brother - Gladys Dove - who happened to be our Auntie (by marriage). It seems Les Huggins was two years above me at North Borough School and in the same class as Pat Mahoney, my best friend Janice's older sister. Janice Mahoney was in my class all through North Borough and has remained my best friend to this day. I do recognise some of the other names Les mentions that were in his year - such as Pat Carr, who was a friend of Pat Mahoney. Like Les Huggins, but obviously in different years, both my brother, Gordon Fullagar (born 1942) and I (born 1948) attended St Paul's Infants, followed by North Borough and finally Vinters (Boys' and Girls' respectively) in the 1950s - and in my case the early 60s. Although we do not personally remember Les Huggins we realise that he was obviously a younger brother of Mavis (who was in my brother's class) and also related to Mary and Donald (in my year at North Borough). Now for the mind boggling-bit(for us anyway!) - we believe we are related to Les Huggins and his family! By chance recently (well, actually by me Googling the name 'BARNES')I came upon a family tree on a website on the internet in the name of Grahame Huggins and as a result my brother and I realise that we are actually related to Les Huggins and his family through our mother, whose maiden name was BARNES. Our shared ancestor would appear to be HORACE BARNES. Would it be possible please to be put in touch with Les Huggins via e-mail? We would really appreciate it if this was possible, especially as my brother, Gordon, is very keen on family history and could probably help Grahame Huggins to expand some of the ancestors' names on his BARNES' family tree. Looking forward to your reply ... Best wishes, Helen Daniels (nee Fullagar) 07/07/2011
