Maidstone I remember it well:
Hi Les: Very sadly I did take a look at not only where The Greyhound was but also my former family home and shop. I have re-sent the photo I tried to send before of Bill & Milly Dodds, who were the long time Landlord/lady of said Greyhound pub.
If that comes out OK then the baby is my younger brother Shaun and is from 1957 in our home. I have on quite a few occasions asked others for their memories of The Greyhound; it was the hub of our local community.
One guy I remember is Nick who was the blacksmith for Fremlins and who lived with his widowed Mum opposite Sargeant & Parks in Wheeler Street.
He lived for those magnificent animals the Shire Horses, mainly dapple Grey in colour. Most people thought he just went in The Greyhound every night (which he did!!) and that was his life.
Well he did have one passion: Steam Lorry racing!! I know this because I used to go with him and sat on the back of his lorry shovelling coal into the fire box and topping up the water tank!!
I think it was mainly somewhere near Parkwood that we did this and I absolutely loved it. Might have been because my Mum made cheese and tomato sandwiches for us both, plus a pasty from my Dad and Nick brought beer and cider for the day!!
My former home and shop look disgusting and of course the Bakery is gone too (now 2 garages!!). Across the road where my best mate Trevor lived looked the same except for the UPVC window and door:
I'm sure I saw his Mum Beryl still looking out of the window as she always did!! The rest of Holland Road hasn't changed much and the Prison Wall still looms over everything else.
No I never let Capoff anywhere near my hair (that I remember anyway!!). That job went to Youngs hairdressers and probably David Elphee at the top of Union Street, almost next door the The Ancient Druids run by the Newman family.
I did go into Brenchly Gardens and that at least remains pretty much the same: Hurrah!! Got to go now; the nurse says I've got to take my medication!! lol
