Country: Australia Maidstone I remember it well: when i left school i started an apprenticeship with W&R Balstons as a papermaker at springfield mill on Sandling road some of my workmates were brian culver, mick barnden, danny moriaty, mick veness and philip vernau (is that the same philip vernau who went to Perth Australia)also neville gearing who lived in perryfield st I think he was a distant relation. Loyd mayger was the mill foreman and i played in the same rock band as his son john mayger who also worked at the mill is it still there?

yes the Mill is still there so is the chimney, the boiler was 300 yard away near the river. the site is smaller as the river side has been improver and Maidstone football stadium built by it.

I used to work at Springfield from 88 to about 97. Great times,,lotsa laughs. Grew up here i think,,had to stick up for myself. It was good for me. I never wanted to work here but friend of my dads got me application so i applied. Im so glad i did. i was petrified walking into the shop floor on my interview with John Martin by my side. Lovely man,,put me at ease. I was going to leave after the first day,,think i went home and cried,LOL.NO,,,,,i stuck it out. Best times!!!.

Thank you Rosemary. I was the same when I went to work at Reeds Corrugated Cases at New Hythe.
We into an office on outside the factory .
The office was filled with smoke had a quick tour of the Factory.
Put on a machine clearing the rubbish from underneath with a broom though there must be something better than this
near the end of the day the foreman came to me and said tomorrow you will be working in the packing department change with brian who was with him
Stayed there for 9 years.
