Last Name:
Maidstone I remember it well: I arrived at Howard House Fant Road in 1959 I had just turned 15yrs old and had just left Doddington childrens home. Howard House was then owned by the KKC and was a girls hostel for girls in care until the age of 18yrs. I loved it there and my first job was at Dunnings the Departmental store in Weak Street, what a laugh we had there, I was the telephonist and the store was run just like the one on "Are you being served". There was two of us from the hostel that worked there Jackie the other girl worked on the shop floor, we used to belt hell for leather in the mornings to catch the trolly bus as we were always late. My next job was at the Len an Upholstery factory at the bottom of Gabriels hill I worked in the office there. I also worked in Danish Bacon Company in the office and really enjoyed that job too. I left there to get married in 1961 as I had met a guy from Burham a right Ted in those days. We are still together and it will be our 53rd Wedding Anniversary this year. We have since over the years been to Maidstone, only passing through in the car and have fond memories of our younger days. The Wig and Gown, the Star, there was a cafe near the river we used to get a fish and chip meal in there, I think it was called the Green door or something similar. The last time that I googled Howard House it said that it was an Unmarried girls home, I was unaware that it was also a childrens home until I read it on this site. Happy Days.
