: I lived in Charles street when i was young and went to St Micheal's infant school which is still there,My mum tooks us away and then there was a gas explosion where my dad Bill Welch was badly injured and then died shortly after. I never saw him again and i am trying to find out details, can anyone give me any information on where there might be some archive articles and even if anyone remembers the year or the accident, Any memories or pointers on where i can find out more would be appreciated is...

Thank you Susan 3 November 1978 Bill Welch 34 of Charles Street ,Maidstone was buried under tons of rubble following an enormous explosion which destroyed his 19th century terraced home. A next door neighbour was pulled to safety by fireman but Mr Welch died 6 days later in the west Kent Hospital. copied from Kent a chronicle of The Century volume four 1975-1999

Good Evening, I stumbled across this thread via google. I'm looking to connect with the son and daughters of Bill Welch... he was a very much loved friend of the family, he was still fondly spoke of by my mother right up to her death in 2007...I came across a couple of photos of bills kids today.. I would like to pass them on. I was born the year after Bill passed, but my brother Mark Wade used to play with Bills kids and like my mother and the rest of the family was very fond of Bill. I was very interested to read this post ,as I worked with Bill at reeds paper mill.I bought an old ajs 350 off of him in 1973.,and used to play golf with him.just before he was killed in 1978 he asked me to look after his cat "Tammy" and we had her for about 3 years.He was a good mate,and was greatly missed
