Maidstone I remember it well: I have notice on here that there has been some discussion about the rumours of tunnels underneath Maidstone. I can say that in relation to Gabriels hill, there are 1005 tunnels. My grandad many year ago owned the shop at the top of the hill as he was a cabinet maker. The shop is not the opticians. This was all before I was born, but my dad remembers it well and has told me how when you went down into the cellar you could walk through the tunnel which was only covered with a piece of wood through to the bottom of the hill. He said that it is likely it stretched even further but they never explored that far. When my grandad moved out of the shop the tunnel was left as it was, but this was some years ago now and it is likely that it has since then been boarded up properly.

I found out that Maidstone was a village in Roman times and there was a lot of quarrying works and have wonderd if these tunnals were they removed the rocks and just built over them .as there is reported there is one the end of Pudding lane but don't go anywhere.
