Greetings all!
I'm researching an artillery regiment (115 Field Regiment (North Midlands) RA) who were camped firstly at Godinton House, Ashford, and then around the Paddock Wood, Horsmonden, Beltring and Capel areas during the summer and into the autumn of 1940. They had been evacuated with the BEF from France that May and were sent to Ashford in July, 1940 as a training unit for local Defence Batteries.
I'm looking for anyone who remembers exactly where they were barracked around Paddock Wood etc., and, secondly, where 'The Pie Shop' in Maidstone was. Their War Diary records that 'The Pie Shop' was used as a reception point for recruits from where they were taken to Ashford in particular. I know there was a pie manufacturer in Maidstone and that they had a shop, but was this big enough to use as a reception centre, or was the pie shop a public house?
Regards.

The Pie Shop I remember was on the corner of Bakers Road and the Broadway. If you don't know Maidstone the Broadway is where the A20 and the A26 merge. From Maidstone the A26 leads to Paddock Wood. It is also near the West station Railway Staition. The Pie shop was originally a Pub The Elephant and Castle. Also Maidstone Market is near by and was used as a reception hall for children refuges from London during the war .

Les, are there any photos of this area in the late 30s or during the 40s?
