Maidstone I remember it well:
Hi Hugh: Didn't play for any of those teams but did play against them at various times though.
Teams I played for were Frittenden FC on a Saturday and Howard De Walden youth club.
Sundays I played for Tekkol, where ourselves and the London Inn were great rivals. I also played for Malgo {Members of the association of local government offices!} on Penenden Heath.
My lifelong best mate Trevor Miles {sadly no longer with us} and one certain James Yarwood also played for them and possibly Jimmy James too; though not certain of that.
We also played at the Chatham dockyards where there was loads of teams!
I remember we would buy pkts. of 20 cigarettes. They were in a plain white packet with a big RN emblazed across the front in a Navy {what else?} blue. Used to cost two shillings and sixpence LSD {old money not drugs!!} My dear old Dad would have loved
The Brenchley next to the Town Hall. When on some long council meetings {he was Mayor of Maidstone 1983/4} he would sometimes nip out to play darts for the Greyhound Pub somewhere in Bank Street or Gabriels Hill if they were playing there. He'd play and usually win a game; have a couple of pints of Stout and Mild; fill his pipe and smoke that!! and then back to the council meeting.
He loved Maidstone and it seems everyone knew him and appeared to like him too. Am off to Canada and the States in a couple of weeks for 6 weeks {Note MR Yarwood!!} BUT will keep in touch with this site whilst away.
So glad to miss all the rubbish the politicians and Media will be splurging out; false promises; negative taunts at each other and the endless debates!! Having said that I will be using my Postal vote. I always say: If you don't vote then don't moan about who we get as our next parliamentary government for 5 years!
Nursie says I've got to take my medicine! so cheers for now...
