Maidstone I remember it well: Tovil Treacle Mines ... back in the '50s I would go to the annual fete on the park area near The Wheatsheaf" pub at the junction of Sutton Rd and Loose Rd. There would be a tent there to allow you to go in and go down to see the Treacle Mines ! you'd get into a "lift" which would shake a bit with a scrolling window making it look as if you were really going down ! At the "bottom" you'd get out through the other side of the lift and walk around a passage with various scenes of the real mining process !! Strangely enough when you'd walked through all the passage way you came out at ground level again !! Happy Days !!

Seams that Tovil did have a 'Treacle Mine' not the stuff you get in tins. It's a type of clay that is more like thick mud. and is used to make things like piggy banks. was up farleigh hill, burial ground Hill.
