Maidstone I remember it well:
To Steve Charlton: Hi Steve once again "Memory" Man Hugh Shannon is right about the bearded Harry Quested. Although I never played for the likes of Beverley Sports or San Pablo Utd one team I did play for was Tekkol, at Allington in the Sunday league in the 60's. Tekkol and The London Tavern were the best teams in those days AND at times all four of the Quested Brothers and i think a cousin Tony Brown (another youngster like me!!) all played for Tekkol. And if I remember correctly they all worked for Loder & Payne in Bank Street at times!! No doubt someone will correct me if i'm wrong won't you Hugh!! Johnny Owen scored loads of goals (mainly set up by Tony and I) and I scored quite a few too. I think John went on to be a Liberal councillor on Maidstone Town council just like my Dad Mac McKenna. Really great bunch of lads who looked after "Babes" Tony and I. We all sat up in 1968 watching Chris Finnegan win Middleweight Gold at the Mexico Olympics into the wee hours of a Sunday morning. This included several beers; lots of shouting and laughing BUT sadly we played a team from Marden (I think!!) and lost 3-1 in the league!! A week later we played them in the cup and won 13-0!! Including myself 5 of that team represented Kent Sunday League many times: Happy days... I also played for Frittenden Football club and believe I was the first "Foreigner" (Non local) to play for said team. Fellow work colleague Nigel Chillingworth at Godfrey Holmes was related to a Land owner/Farmer (a member of the Hambro banking family) and whose field was our pitch invited me to play for the team: Would you believe after a massive debate I was allowed to play for the team and thoroughly enjoyed myself for two or three seasons and was made very welcome. Mind you our grass cutters (The Sheep!!) had to be moved before each game AND put back afterwards. Again Halcyon Days.
