Country: South Africa
Maidstone I remember it well: I remember, moving from Peterborough after nationalisation. I remember Maidstone less than I remember Lenham. My parents were the owners of the Singing Kettle from 1949-1951 after the nationalisation of their haulage business in 1945. I remember walking up to the cross and chasing rabbits in the fields, carols on the village square. The technicians who were working on the cross-channel television experiement were staying at the café and I was with them in their caravan when the first signal was received. A blurry fuzzy picture but a success. The trade at the café was busy because of the hop pickers who still came down from London but because of the lack of staff and produce it eventually became too much for my mother and they sold the business.
Hi Anthony I am sorry if some of the text is a bit jumbled but it didn't come down too well. I am very familiar with Lenham but cannot remember any hops were they more towards Chart Sutton?
