Maidstone I remember it well: I attended North Borough Primary School up until 1957. I rememeber Mr Hopkins the Headteacher who was very passionate about singing and conducted the whole school at the carol service. I remember Mrs Fryer who I had for two years as my form teacher. It was a good school and provided me with a good grounding in the basic subjects. I then went on to MGS and remember so many of the teachers - Mr Newcombe, Mr Caley, Mr Portal, Mr Johnson (Ichabod), Mr Stewart, Mr Wyeth, Mr Kemp, Revd Stanley Good, Mr Faulkner, Mr Fawcett, Mr Dunning, Mr Cutforth, Mr Blake etc. I remember the school plays in which I took part - Richard 11, Merchant of Venice, Winter's Tale, Twelfth Night, Macbeth, Dr Faustus, Tobias and the Angel. I remember the prefects and the punishmenst they meted out which included slippering younger boys. I remember Mr Claydon as a very remote figure who I only spoke with twice in 7 years. i remember how the non degree teachers eg woodwork and PE were not allowed to sit on the stage for Speech Day. I remmeber Dr Beechings' talk at Speech Day as though it were yesterday. He told us that if we were ever unhappy in a job to leave. The teachers were horrified
Nigel, you have the most astonishing memory. I had forgotten about the MGS snobbery towards Nogger Knight and Tish Stewart, but I certainly remember being (deservedly) beaten by both of them. My abiding memory of North Borough is of walking alongside you every week with the class to the swimming baths, earnestly discussing the Meaning of Life and how unfair it was to be banned from reading the Beano
