Maidstone I remember it well:
I went to Maidstone Technical School from 1950 -53 I went at 15 (not 13) I lived near Sevenoaks so travelled on the Otford train every day which was usually crowded.
I used the half hour journey to learn the 'hymn for the day' as we were not allowed hymn books for morning assembly. I did one year of general studies( having Miss Svendsen to teach us D.S.
She was an excellent teacher and I learned more theory from her than from any other DS teacher. It stood me in good stead throughtout life) I then took the catering course instead of the nursing or secretarial.
Miss Harrison was our very good art teacher. She became Mrs Weston later. Miss Elsie was the music teacher and she married at the same time but I remember not her married name.
Miss Jackson(also a very good teacher) was our English teacher. A few years ago I wrote a poem about her which starts; 'Twilight' said our teacher, is my favourite written word......
I remember the lesson well when she was telling us about her favourite words. Miss Gordon was our form teacher in my first year. She was the biology teacher and excellent. I loved the subject and did well in the exams as I did with Art.
Angela Stuffins was my best friend in that year. Her father had the pork butcher's shop in the town. I remember Rosemary who joined the RAF(I think) and Grace or Gladys and the cello player whose name I forget. There was a girl in our class whose name was 'Young' but whether she is Lorna who has already written on this site, I do not know.
I became a D.S. teacher and now live in Ireland. I have our form photo with Miss Gordon in the centre clutching a slow worm. In our first Biology lesson she produced an owl pellet, walked round the whole class showing it to each in turn.
Of course, non of us knew what it was but she had grabbed our attention. Like everyone, I was not too keen on Miss Thomas but she was very kind to me when I returned to the school for a reference a year or two later when I wanted to go to Teacher Training College. I did the Christmas card one year and also design the book plate which went inside the library books. I still have copies of them.
