Maidstone I remember it well:
Hello again!! This is a long message for Ken Allen, formerly of York Road. My husband drafted it and left it to me to type!!
I remember Ken well, he went to Maidstone Technical School for Boys after taking the 11 Plus exam. I was surprised he remembered my mother playing the piano, which she taught for many years.
Regarding the Austin 7 in the back garden which my brother was attempting to convert into a small sports car, this work stopped after he got married but he kept the engine and gearbox.
This he took to Norfolk when his family moved there and his widow only sold it 2 years ago after Johns death.
I havent seen any of the other lads from York Road for many years, but the ones I remember are Jimmy French, Raymond Jeffrey, Malcolm O'Nion, Keith Amey, Derek Leeson, David Munn and Mickey Greenstreet.
I remember some of us having bicycle races around a circuit, consisting of York Road from near Kens house, along the short bit to West Park Road, up there until it joined up with the top part of York Road, Ken I think usually won,
I seem to think that the make of his bicycle was a Dunelt. He and I also for a while made non flying model aircraft from solid balsa wood kits pre-dating the plastic kits.
These kits consisted of roughly pre-cut solid pieces of balsa wood which you had to cut or sand into the correct shapes using templates provided with the kits, then gluing the parts together, painting, and affixing transfers.
I remember Ken doing a very good model of a Saab J29 single seat jet fighter which he painted silver. I dont know how long it has been since Ken saw Maidstone, but like many places parts of it are unrecognisable from when we were young, not all changes for the best.!!! Good luck Ken, good to share the memories!!! PS Keiths mother lived to 91 - and his Dad to, wait for it - 104!!!
