Robert Watson Whatt.
He pioneered a System of rays that were/are sent out and when the ray hits a metal object are bounced back and give a details of the size and distance of the object.
In June of 1941 Sir Philip Joubert of Coastal Comand RAF informed the public of this system of Air Ministry experimental stations set up around the coast 2 of which were Dover and Dunkirk.
The system was know as the Radio Direction finding or RGF,this in 1943 was changed to RADAR as was what the USA called it so as to avoid confusion between the Alies.
there were to smaller stations at Whitstable and Forness intended to detect low flying aircraft flyig low up the thames under the bigger stations at Dover and Dunkirk
The station on top of Dover cliffs was 360ft tall for the out going signal and another tower to resieve the returning signal at 240 feet so the Luffakke tried to distroy them on the 12 August 1940 they attacked the Dover Station. The WAAF Plotter had to report had to report the aircraft heading straight towards them.
The remained at their post till the last posible moment to take cover.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowing reported that the chain of home staitions would continue to opperate with the euipment they had .
This was with there own heavy equipment or lighter equipement provided for such emergencies.
The Luftwaffe relished there attacks were pointless and no more attacks after August 18
